Eight stores from failed retail group all sold successfully in live-streamed auction

Eight stores shed by the failed M&Co retail chain portfolio have been sold at auction.

The shop units in towns throughout Scotland from Thurso to Peebles were all sold to private buyers.

The sales, which ranged in price from £50,000 to £231,000, were part of a 24 September live-streamed commercial property auction by auctioneers Acuitus which raised a total of £24.4m.

The shops sold were High Street in Peebles sold for £231000, High Street in Nairn £130,000, Rotterdam Street in Thurso £220,000, Dockhead Street in Saltcoats £125,000, High Street in Hawick £151,000, Main Street in Wishaw £215,000, Channel Street in Galashiels and Dalrymple Street in Girvan raised £50,000.

Acuitus chairman, Richard Auterac said: “We added this extra auction to our 2020 schedule to meet the demands of our clients to realise capital.

“Implementation of their strategies had been largely put on hold in the run up to the 2019 election and during the subsequent Covid crisis.

“Our pre-summer auctions had revealed growing buying momentum from high net-worth investors who are looking for opportunities to achieve a stable return superior to the returns available on negative gilt yields and volatile equities.

“Property company demand has remained resilient for active management situations especially in the light of the recent changes in the use classes order.

“The results from this sale illustrate those trends and show that buyers were undeterred by the Government’s new Covid-19 guidance which was issued the day before.”

M&Co owner Meridian Realisations was put into administration last month before most of its assets were bought back in a pre-pack deal.

The move led to the group's UK-wide store estate being reduced from 265 to 218, while 380 people were made redundant, leaving a workforce in the remaining group of about 2,200.
