Eight Scots health boards in top 20 hotspots across Europe as covid cases continue to surge

Eight of the top 20 covid hotspots in Europe are currently in Scotland, according to the latest World Health Organisation statistics.

NHS Lanarkshire and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde sit in first and second respectively in the league table of worst-hit regions across the continent.

There are 853 per 100,000 people who have the virus in Lanarkshire, while in Glasgow there are 748.5 Scots per 100,000.

The other six health boards that make up the top 20 are: Lothian, Dumfries and Galloway, Forth Valley, Ayrshire and Arran, Highland and Fife - as of August 30.

The rise in cases across the country is believed to be down to the relaxation of restrictions on August 9, however pupils returning to the classroom after their summer breaks is also a contributing factor.

Over the last week NHS chiefs in Lanarkshire have announced that patients would only be allowed one visitor a day due to the rise in cases.

Last week, cases rose dramatically in Scotland with the daily case rate broken three times.

Speaking to the BBC, Professor Jason Leitch said it is in people's hands to slow down the number of cases across the country.

"We are hopeful that things might slow down, but there aren't many signs of that," he added.

"We're doubling every seven days and that would mean we get to 10,000 sometime this week, maybe even beyond that by the end of the week.

"But it is in our hands. There are things we can do about that - vaccination, testing and following the rules, the three things everybody now knows so well.

"We're now beginning to see rises in hospital admissions and that is harm.

"We don't admit people to hospital for no reason."

Yesterday, the Scottish Government announced no new covid deaths has occurred in the last 24-hour period. Since the start of the pandemic in March last year, 8,103 Scots have passed away after contracting the virus.

There were 3,893 new cases of the virus identified in the last 24 hours.

There are currently 551 people in hospitals across Scotland battling the virus, with 52 being treated in intensive care units.

Some 4,103,687 people have received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 3,668,041 have received their second dose in Scotland.
