Eight rescued from rockfall while out taking daily exercise on Isle of Wight

Eight people were rescued from a rockfall while out taking their daily exercise on the Isle of Wight.

Rescue teams scrambled to the scene in the popular seaside resort of Shanklin at around 4.40pm on Saturday.

Police, firefighters, the local lifeboat and a search-and-rescue helicopter were all involved in the operation, HM Coastguard said.

Despite fears, no one was injured in the rockfall.

There was “nothing to suggest” any of the members of the public were breaching lockdown restrictions, the rescue body confirmed.

The eight people were out walking in two groups and were rescued using socially-distanced procedures.

David Hurden, senior maritime operations officer for HM Coastguard, said: “There is nothing to suggest these two separate groups were breaking lockdown rules.

“They were socially distancing from each other on a walk near to their homes.

“We’re thankful that no-one has been injured in the incident and that people did the right thing by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard.”
