Eight players who received FWA Footballer of the Year 2019 votes revealed

Raheem Sterling was named FWA Footballer of the Year on Monday.

The Manchester City star, who has 29 goals to his name this term in all competitions, was a deserving winner of the award, after polling 62 per cent of the 400-plus votes.

The 24-year-old becomes the first City winner of football's oldest individual award in 50 years - since Tony Book shared the award with Derby's Dave Mackay.

Sterling received 100 votes more than PFA Players' Player of the Year, Virgil van Dijk, who finished second after a towering campaign with Liverpool .

Sterling's City teammate, Sergio Aguero - who has scored 20-plus Premier League goals for the fifth successive season - finished third.

Sterling was the victor by a considerable margin and only EIGHT Premier League stars polled votes.

Half of those were from Pep Guardiola's side, with David Silva and Bernardo Silva also receiving nods.

Tottenham and England striker Harry Kane also received votes, as did Chelsea's Eden Hazard, the Belgian who won the award in 2014-15.

Perhaps the most surprising nominee however was Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette.

The French striker has scored 13 goals in 34 Premier League outings for Unai Emery's men this term.

The women's award was a close run thing, with Nikita Parris, also of Manchester City, pipping Arsenal's Dutch striker Vivianne Miedema by the slimmest of margins.

The women's award is decided by a two-stage poll of experts and after the first phase, the duo emerged as clear favourites; both polled at least 10 votes more than their nearest contender - England captain Steph Houghton - with Parris polling one extra vote.

In the second stage, Lionesses' striker Parris won by a single vote (11-10).

Other votes in the first stage were cast for Beth Mead, Danielle van der Donk, Leah Williamson (all Arsenal), Magdalena Ericsson, Erin Cuthbert, Karen Carney, Fran Kirby (all Chelsea), Georgia Stanway (Man City), Lucy Bronze (Lyon) and Toni Duggan (Barcelona).
