Eight people rescued after boat capsizes in Lake Eildon in regional Victoria

Water police have rescued several people from Lake Eildon after a boat carrying eight passengers capsized on Thursday night.

Emergency services were called to the lake, north-east of Melbourne, around 7pm.

A rescue helicopter found two people clinging to a tree in the water, while three others had swum to an island and three more had made it to shore.

Paramedics assessed the occupants of the boat and three people were taken to hospital.

Of the people rescued, six were aged in their 20s and two were teenagers.

Police are investigating what caused the boat to capsize.

The incident comes after a swimmer drowned in the lake after going missing on New Year's Day.
