Eight people feared dead including children after two planes crash over lake

Eight people are feared dead after two planes crashed over a tourist spot lake.

Two bodies were recovered and six other people are believed to have been killed when the planes collided in the air and crashed into the Coeur d'Alene Lake in Idaho, local police said late on Sunday.

Initial reports are there were a total of eight passengers and crew on the two planes, but that is still being verified.

"At this time it is believed there are no survivors," the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office said.

The victims included adults and children.

Investigators have not yet established the cause of the collision.

The planes sank in 127 feet of water after crashing into the lake, the statement added.

Local media reported that the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating the collision and that one aircraft involved in the collision was a Cessna 206.

There were believed to be a number of witnesses as many people were boating on the lake during the holiday weekend.

One women said she held the two bodies in the water near the wreckage while waiting for emergency services.

Kaitlin Knapp, reporter at 4 News Now said: "A witness told me she saw the wreckage and her friend held two bodies near the debris until the Coast Guard got to them.

"The witness told me she didn’t see the crash, but heard it and immediately saw the debris in the water. Kootenai County Sheriff’s Lt. Ryan Higgins said the planes are about 120-130 feet deep in the water."

The lake is popular with tourists and many had headed there to celebrate July 4.
