Eight million blocked from applying for online account due to ID problem

Eight million UK residents have previously been prevented from applying for an account online as they do not own photo ID such as a passport or driving licence. One in 10 people in the UK has no passport and 1.3million adults have no bank account according to new research.

A spokesperson for Suits Me said: “Up until now millions have been at a loss with banking due to a lack of the types of identification documents typically requested by traditional banks and Fintech’s. Furthermore, with the continual closure of branches, online is the only option for many.

"We wanted to break these barriers, and make banking-type services more accessible, by making people aware there are a variety of ways for people to identify themselves. For example, you can order a copy of your birth certificate from your local council for £11 or another form of ID is a PASS card which you can get from your post office for £15.

"It makes applying for a personal account far more affordable than paying £104 for a passport or £35 for a driving licence."
