Eight legendary Glasgow cinemas and what they are today

Back in the days before streaming, or even the internet, a trip to the local cinema was the only way to catch the latest release.

Here in Glasgow, we were spoiled for choice. Unfortunately, not all of these venues survived.

Some have been razed to the ground, while some serve a different purpose today - but none have been forgotten.

The records show that Glasgow actually had more cinemas per person that anywhere outside of North America. In the lead up to the Second World War, the erection of cinemas was peaking - and nowhere else was doing it quite like us.

With the creation of venues such as the Imperial, the Gaumont, and La Scala we weren't hurting for cinemas. With lavish sounding names setting visitors up for whatever exotic film they were about to watch, film was in its golden age.

As the century moved on and televisions became the household norm, cinema tickets were only getting more expensive with the numbers of people coming through their doors declining. From the 1960s on, Glasgow began to lose several of its cinemas.

The 1980s saw almost extinction of independent cinemas, with the larger global cinema companies taking over while more and more small venues closed up shop. We've taken a look through the archives and found some snaps from days gone by of our lost picture houses, and taken to Google Maps to find out what's happening in their spots today.
