Eight Iranian women spared from execution after Trump’s appeal to Iran’s leaders

  • US President Donald Trump says eight female protesters who were set to be executed in Iran have been spared, thanks to him.
  • “Very good news! I have just been informed that the eight women protestors who were going to be executed tonight in Iran will no longer be killed,” he wrote in a Truth Social post. “Four will be released immediately, and four will be sentenced to one month in prison. I very much appreciate that Iran, and its leaders, respected my request, as President of the United States, and terminated the planned execution.”
  • A day earlier, Trump had written a message, posted on Truth Social, to Iran’s leaders, stating, “I would greatly appreciate the release of these women. I am sure that they will respect the fact that you did so. Please do them no harm! Would be a great start to our negotiations!!!”
  • White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt praised Trump’s efforts to save the women, telling Fox News, "Only President Trump could save the lives of these eight beautiful Iranian women ... And now that will happen thanks to President Trump, because he's a humanitarian at heart."
  • Tensions with Iran remain high as the US looks to set up a second round of peace talks after Trump extended the ceasefire Tuesday, 24 hours before it was due to expire.
