Two people had to be freed from separate cars after the crash.

Eight people have been injured, including a school-aged child, in an eleven-vehicle crash on one of Melbourne's busiest arterial roads.

The crash happened at the intersection of Sydney Road and the Metropolitan Ring Road at Fawkner about 4:30pm.

Police said a truck collided with multiple cars and a traffic light while exiting the Ring Road.

A male passenger in the first car hit by the truck has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Seven others were also injured, including the 30-year-old truck driver and a school-aged girl.

Two people had to be rescued after becoming trapped in separate vehicles.

Police, paramedics and firefighters were all called to the chaotic scene, which unfolded as traffic ground to a standstill.
