Eight foot Chewbacca to take pride of place in new Forbidden Planet superstore

A giant Chewbacca has moved in to take pride of place in what is set to be the biggest comic store in Scotland.

The eight foot high Funko Pop Chewbacca arrived in a giant crate on Thursday morning ready to stand proud in the new Forbidden Planet store in Sauchiehall Street.

And eagle eyed Star Wars fans can sneak a peek if they walk by the new shop which is set to open on Saturday, November 9.

When the new store opens its doors it will become the biggest comic shop in the UK.

And while the staff will be sad at leaving their current home in Buchanan Street after 32 years, they can’t help but be excited at the prospect of more space - it’s four times the size and has three floors to be exact, offering more comics and collectable must-have treasures than ever before.

It will also be the first time that comic book enthusiasts will see the giant murals currently being drawn for the giant store by Rutherglen artist Frank Quitely.

Frank has drawn for the biggest comic book companies in the world, including Marvel Comics and DC Comics.

He has illustrated the likes of Superman, Batman, Judge Dredd and the X-Men, as well as many independent comics.

And in 2017 an exhibition of his work took pride of place at Kelvingrove Art Gallery, and it is some of these giant images that will feature around the three-floors of the superstore.

Now, Frank, real name Vincent Deighan, will see his work take pride of place in the ultimate venue for an artist - a comic book shop.

He has been in top secret talks with the Forbidden Planet team with the plans including Superman and the other heroes from the comic book world.

The original plan was to set the scene of Gotham City with characters around the store but now, the focus looks set to be on comic book covers and heroes drawn by Frank.

There will also be some of the stunning work from the Kelvingrove exhibition.

Kevin O’Donnell, Retail Manager of the Glasgow store said: "Work is well and truly underway at the new store and it is a busy but exciting time for everyone.

"We will now have three floors, a new gaming section, Manga and much more - it will be strange for everyone as it is four times the size of our Buchanan Street store.

"We have also employed eight more staff for Sauchiehall Street.

"To see it taking shape is a real thrill and we can now start visualising how it will look on November 9.

"And to have Frank Quitely’s work taking pride of place is something we can’t wait to see, this alone will be worth a look especially for anyone who enjoyed the exhibition, The Art of Comics, at Kelvingrove a couple of years ago as there may be a few familiar pieces on our walls."

The new store is planning to host events and more signings for comic book fans to enjoy along with the biggest Manga collection ever seen in the country.

The Buchanan Street store will remain open until early January.

Back in 1991 comic book legend the late Stan Lee caused a sensation among comic book devotees when he signed at the city centre store as has Grant Morrison MBE, Nichelle Nichols and  Clive Barker.

Forbidden Planet will open its new Sauchiehall Street store on Saturday, November 9 at 9am.
