Eight coronavirus cases confirmed at Bristol city centre office

Eight people have tested positive for coronavirus at a financial services office in Bristol city centre.

Hargreaves Lansdown said the cases were confirmed this week at its headquarters in One College Square South, Anchor Road.

A company spokesman said: "There are eight colleagues (out of a total workforce of around 1,600) who are self-isolating as a result of positive Covid tests this week."

He added suggestions of an “outbreak” at the office are "entirely false".

Public Health England defines an outbreak as two or more confirmed cases within 14 days of each other.

A source close to the firm said she believes the cases were avoidable.

She said: "The company sent home some staff during the [pandemic], requiring other staff to remain in the office, despite the 'work from home' message from the Government.

"Many of these people in the office had the ability to work from home, especially since the second work from home message from the Government, with laptops being issued months before.

"It was not essential for these people to be in the office. All people who have caught it confirmed they did not touch the others, they weren’t being reckless and were in fact complying with the firm's policy.

"The company was not providing a safe environment for their staff, putting them and their families at risk."

The Hargreaves Lansdown spokesman defended the firm's management of safety.

He said: “Our approach to the pandemic is to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of our colleagues and the people they come into contact with, whilst maintaining essential client services, such as paying people’s pensions.

"We rigorously monitor and follow government guidance and have sought advice from Public Health England to ensure that we continue to keep our people safe, which includes the necessary social distancing and hygiene measures, and a comprehensive well-being and support programme."
