Eight Chelsea players who have a point to prove after failed summer transfer moves

With Chelsea making big moves in the transfer window, there was expected to be more movement out of the club over the summer.

However, that wasn't the case enough, with the Blues struggling to let go of several players and a lack of exits over the months

It means that the Blues have a large squad for the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign, unless they are able to move players on in the January transfer window.

So who are the players who have something to prove to Frank Lampard and are fighting for their places in the squad?

Arsenal vs Chelsea vs Spurs - Who came out of the transfer window best and more

Kepa Arrizabalaga

Kepa Arrizabalaga was dropped out of the side after more mistakes at the beginning of the campaign and he is going to struggle to get back into the starting XI.

However, Edouard Mendy could be out of the side for the weekend with a thigh injury, and if he is then Kepa could get another chance to prove himself.

For the 26-year-old, he will need to take any chance that he can get to prove why he should be the world's most expensive goalkeeper.

Antonio Rudiger

Having failed to make Lampard's matchday squad for the entire campaign to date, Rudiger looked like the most likely to move away this summer.

However, loan deals never materialised and now the Germany international is going to be trying to find a way back into regular football.

It will be a tough ask for the 27-year-old, who has slipped down to the number five spot in the centre-back group and he has a lot to prove in the coming weeks.

Rudiger has been a regular for Germany. but with a Euro 2021 tournament round the corner, he needs to play regularly to keep his spot in the side.

Fikayo Tomori

There was late movement in the transfer window when West Ham almost pushed through a move for the Chelsea centre-back.

The 22-year-old has also struggled for game time over the course of 2020 and has been out of the matchday squad or on the bench.

Tomori has featured in only two league matches since the turn of the year. Lampard has faith in the England international, but there is still a lot for him to do in terms of getting a starting place.

Marcos Alonso

With Ben Chilwell coming into the side, there is a new number one left-back and his performance against Crystal Palace showed the potential that he has.

For Marcos Alonso, he is now on the outskirts of the team, not helped by his actions during the 3-3 draw against West Brom.

If Lampard goes for the three at the back, he has a chance to become a wing-back once again, but there is little chance he will play regularly unless there are injuries.

Emerson Palmieri

The Italy international has never found a regular starting position at the Blues, and now that is even harder to come by with Chilwell in the side.

The 26-year-old is also still a regular for his country, however that could change if he doesn't get any game time for his club, which is a possibility.

Emerson will be fighting Alonso for the back-up spot before looking for a move away in January.

Tammy Abraham

With the summer signings, Tammy Abraham's place in the starting XI is under some threat, with question marks over whether or not Timo Werner should be leading the line.

Abraham has found the back of the net once so far this season, so keeping his spot in the side could be difficult, if Lampard wants Werner to be up top.

Abraham is going to be in for a fight for his place in the side and the 23-year-old will be trying to prove that he can be the striker Lampard needs.

Callum Hudson-Odoi

After more transfer interest in Callum Hudson-Odoi from Bayern Munich, the winger did not push for a move and instead he is with the Blues for another campaign.

With Hakim Ziyech coming back into the side after injury, plus Christian Pulisic and Mason Mount fighting for a spot, Hudson-Odoi is not guaranteed a start.

He will be trying to get his place in the team on a regular basis, but there is a lot of competition for the place on the right.

Olivier Giroud

The World Cup winner has slipped down to being the number three striker behind Abraham and Werner, but he has proved how he can impact the Blues.

The 34-year-old bagged another brace for his country during the week and he can still be a massive asset for the Blues, bringing others into play and also finish the chances.

But again, the striker has a challenge to get into the team with Lampard looking to use his new players.
