Eight big Covid announcements to look out for in Micheal Martin's lockdown speech on Thursday

A nation will hold its breath once again when Micheal Martin finally outlines Ireland's lockdown exit plans.

We've seen weeks of constant speculation of late after the country endured some of the strictest measures in the world over the last 13 months.

When George Hamilton spoke those famous words 31 years ago, what followed was both joy and a major sigh of relief. Everyone will be hoping for the same result on Thursday.

Full-scale Level Five measures were only scrapped recently, giving a small bit of respite to those who had been stuck at home since Christmas.

Over the past few weeks we've seen the 5km rule scrapped, meaning people could finally travel around freely within their own county.

We were allowed meet up with another household outdoors, while fully vaccinated members of the public were let meet up inside.

Golf courses, tennis clubs and outdoor cultural attractions, such as Dublin Zoo, were able to return.

Inter-county GAA training could resume, while other elite athletes were also able to get back to work.

But the question on everyone lips is; what happens next?

The Taoiseach has said that Government will give an outline of the country's plan for the coming months, which will see a continued phased reopening of society.

This means that we should finally get the answers to when hairdressers, retail, pubs, restaurants and hotels will reopen.

After months of criticism for a lack of clear messaging, Mr Martin has promised to "give clarity" to such sectors.

Here's a look at everything we can expect in Thursday's lockdown exit plan:

Key dates

Although it's something that we haven't seen much of lately, the Government is expected to give dates for when certain sectors can return.

It's important to note that all current measures are in place until May 4, and despite the announcement on Thursday, nothing will change before then.

It's also worth keeping in mind that not everything will return at once.

We'll likely see a phased reopening every two or three weeks, similar to when former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced an easing of measures last summer.

Retail

Micheal Martin will give guidelines for a phased return to retail, meaning we'll finally be able to go shopping again.

It's expected that Click and Collect services will resume first, followed by a return to in-store buying.

However, there will be strict social distancing measures in place at all times.

Hairdressers

Yet another relief for most, it's anticipated that we'll be able to go for our first legal haircut of the year in the next few weeks.

It's understood that a return to hairdressers, barbers and other personal services is a high priority for Government.

Pubs, restaurants and hotels

The one question that many want answered. And yes, we should have clarity after the announcement.

It has been strongly suggested that outdoor dining, including the return of beer gardens, will happen in the second week of June.

After this, indoor pubs and restaurants would be allowed return sometime at the end of June or early July.

It has not yet been made clear if the Government will continue with its bizarre distinction between so-called wet pubs and gastropubs.

But we understand that Fianna Fail TDs, Senators and MEPs are in favour of reopening all pubs and restaurants at the same time this summer.

Its most recent Parliamentary Party (PP) meeting heard numerous motions in support of the all pubs being treated the same as restaurants.

Hotels and Airbnbs are also expected to be back in business from June.

Travel ban

It is highly expected that the ban on inter-county travel will be lifted in line with the reopening of the hospitality sector.

Construction

Construction has slowly resumed through April on a phased basis and despite one outbreak in the month, it appears that plans are continuing for the full reopening of the sector in May.

Places of worship

The Government faced heavy criticism from multiple religious leaders and TDs for not allowing places of worship to hold prayer services during the likes of Easter and Ramadan.

But from the middle of May, it's expected they will be given the green light to return.

Sport

Sports training and games for over 18s is also expected to get the nod to resume at some stage in May.

What happens now?

The National Public Health Emergency Team will meet on Wednesday to discuss Ireland's current Covid situation, before making a recommendation to Government on what restrictions they believe should be eased.

The Cabinet Covid-19 Sub Committee, which is made up of key Ministers and medical experts, will meet later in the day to discuss these issues.

A full Cabinet meeting will take place on Thursday morning to iron out the final details before a lengthy announcement is made.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin will then make a full State of the Nation address to finally explain the lockdown exit plan.

His announcement is expected to take place at around 6pm.
