Eight appliances Scottish households should switch off immediately to save on energy bills

People across the UK have been told that there are eight appliances in particular that they should shut off if they want to save money on energy bills.

Amid soaring energy prices, households should ensure that appliances such as heaters and chargers are fully switched off at the wall.

Homeowners and renters should also be sure that taps aren't left dripping, as this can also run up costs.

It is estimated that over £30 a year on average could be saved by turning off appliances instead of leaving them on standby, as reported by Birmingham Live.

Other things people can do to save money is to switch their lightbulbs to more efficient LED versions and only turn on the heating in the morning and evening times.

Uswitch energy expert Will Owen said : “See if there are any appliances you can switch off when they are not in use.

"The Energy Saving Trust estimates you can save around £35 a year by remembering to turn your appliances off properly, and not leaving them in standby mode.”

The seven appliances listed include:

  • Chargers
  • TVs
  • Computers
  • Heating
  • Lights
  • Dripping taps
  • Dishwashers
  • A/C units

Mr Owen also said: “You should also check if your bulbs are LEDs rather than less energy efficient ones, such as halogens.

"Every 50-watt halogen bulb that is swapped for an LED alternative saves households £3 a year. It may not seem like much, but it all adds up over every light in your home."

Michael Reading at Housetastic added: “Set a timer early in the morning so your home is nice and warm as you get ready for the day, and perhaps set a timer in the early evenings, but generally the heating does not need to be on all day.

“It is estimated that turning the thermostat down by just one degree can save up to 10% on a fuel bill, not to mention the amount of energy.

"Assess whether you really need to turn the heating to its highest temperature and instead aim for a comfortable heat.”
