A plan for eight apartments on the former site of a care home has been submitted to Wirral Council.
If approved, the proposal will see seven two-bedroom flats and one single bedroom flat built at 38-40 North Road in Birkenhead.
The site was occupied by Devonshire Manor care home before it closed last year.
The North Road building is directly opposite St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church and has parking space for up to seven cars at the front.
The back of the site is mainly paved with a small area of grass.
Given its location on the edge of the town centre in a residential area, the applicant believes the plan is sustainable and has good access to nearby services.
One key aspect pointed out in the application is that allowing development in areas like this one will provide much-needed homes and help to avoid building on the greenbelt.
The design of the building will remain relatively unchanged, apart from the replacement of the existing roof with a Mansard style roof to provide accommodation on the second floor.
The applicant’s planning statement said this was a “sensitively designed proposal” which will “preserve and support the distinctive local character and protect the amenity of neighbours”.

Another advantage of the site is that it is does not have any vegetation of an ecological interest and there is no evidence of the presence of any protected species.
It is now up to Wirral Council to decide whether or not the plan should be approved.
