Eiffel Tower in Paris opens today but you'll have to walk up

The Eiffel Tower re-opened this morning but frightened tourists stayed away.

There were barely a dozen people in the queue before it opened at 8.30am.

Not a single British tourist was among them.

As the visitors trailed through they were greeted with applause from Tower staff and a band serenaded them.

There were huge security measures in place with everyone passing through x-ray metal detectors.

Everyone with a ticket had to walk to the first floor - as the lifts remained shut.

The tower has been shut to all visitors since March because of the coronavirus crisis.

Tourists can only get up by booking online and all slots have been taken for the next week.

People will have to climb up and down to the first floor via a strict one way system.

Everyone over 11 must be fully masked or will not be allowed to climb.

Early next month the second level will be open with very limited lift access for some visitors.

A spokesman said: “We are very pleased to be opening again.
“We will monitor the situation very closely.

“If all goes well we will hope to open the third floor some time later in the year.”

The opening comes as the UK's first air bridges with Spain, Portugal and France could be given the go-ahead later today, according to reports.

UK travellers could be free to go on abroad from July 4 under plans being drawn up by Boris Johnson.

The Prime Minister is expected to give the green light to deals that deals have been put in place to allow for quarantine-free travel, reports the Daily Mail.

Major airlines and tour operators are set to be briefed on the plans tomorrow.

It would mean Brits could go abroad without having to spend 14 days in quarantine when they return.
