Eiffel Tower closed after man climbs up 1,000ft monument

The Eiffel Tower has been evacuated and closed to the public after a man was seen climbing up the iconic Parisian landmark.

Shocking photographs show the man climbing up the side of the monument, which is 1,063ft.

Police and emergency services were immediately called to the scene with photos showing rescue workers with the unidentified climber.

His motives remain unclear.

A Paris police spokeswoman said a team of firefighters including a climbing specialist is on the scene.

The official Eiffel Tower Twitter account said: "The tourEiffel is currently closed until further notice.

"To avoid too long a wait, we advise our visitors to postpone their visit."

A spokesperson from the Eiffel Tower told Reuters: "The man entered the tower normally and started to climb once he was on the second floor."

Photos posted on social media suggest the man had got around two thirds of the way up the tower.

Nigel Farage has milkshake thrown all over him during Newcastle visit

It is not the first time a daredevil has attempted the feat.

In 2015, British "freerunner" James Kingston climbed the edifice without safety ropes and without permission, dodging security cameras as he went.

19 major terror attacks have been stopped in last two years by UK security services
