Eidur Gudjohnsen believes Manchester United's move for Odion Ighalo is proof they can no longer attract the best strikers in the world.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side agreed a move for the Nigerian forward on transfer deadline day as they look to fill the gap left by the injured Marcus Rashford.
The 30-year-old, who has been playing for Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua, arrived in Manchester over the weekend after Premier League rivals Spurs made a late bid for the forward.
Ighalo is expected to be involved when United travel for a warm weather training camp this weekend and could be in line to make his debut against Gudjohnsen's former side Chelsea on Monday 17 February.
United caught plenty of people off guard with their deal to sign Ighalo and Gudjohnsen believes the transfer is proof the club can no longer attract the best players to move to Old Trafford.
"It comes back to the time of the season of this [Ighalo] transfer as well. I don't think any of the best strikers are available," the former Chelsea forward told Sky Sports.
"I don't think any of the best strikers are eager to join United anymore."
Fellow former Chelsea forward Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink also echoed these thoughts, suggesting United should have been ‘throwing money’ at Danny Ings instead.
“He must be the luckiest man! Going to China, being away from Europe nobody seeing him for 2 and a half years since he was at Watford and then getting a loan move at United,” Hasselbaink said.
“Wow. That doesn’t happen! It says how far behind United are from Liverpool, Manchester City and even Chelsea. They have got a big job ahead.
“They needed somebody in. I think he was not their number one and I would be surprised if he was their number two or three as well.
“He is getting an opportunity, and he will definitely get minutes, and we will see if he can do it.”
