Eid Mubarak! Thousands gather at Platt Fields Park in Manchester to mark Eid al-Adha - pictures

Thousands gathered at Platt Fields Park to mark Eid al-Adha, one of the holiest days in the year.

Millions of Muslims in the UK are honouring the sacred festival, which represents the willingness of Ibrahim, known as Abraham in other traditions, to sacrifice his son for God.

The huge prayer gathering in Manchester is reportedly the biggest in the north west, with celebrations and prayers held elsewhere across Greater Manchester at mosques and community spaces.

Eid al-Adha also comes as Muslims perform the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia - a mandatory religious duty that must be carried out at least once in the lifetime of all adult Muslims.

Eid in the Park has become an annual event.

Last year, under sunnier skies, more than 9,000 people gathered at the park in Fallowfield to mark the festival.

Eid ul Adha starts on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah - which means 'month of pilgrimage' - and lasts until the 13th day.

Dhul Hijjah is 12th and final month in the Islamic calendar.

The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, said: "Whether you're one of Britain's 3.3 million Muslims, or one of more than a billion people worldwide celebrating Eid al-Adha this week, I want to take this opportunity to say Eid Mubarak to you all.

"The story of Eid al-Adha is one of sacrifice, about doing your duty and doing what's right.

"And that is something we see daily from Muslims right across the UK - men and women who, in all kinds of different ways, make such a huge contribution to modern British life."

The congregational prayer at Platt Fields Park was being followed by activities for families including a fun fair, rides and stalls.
