Hundreds of people have reportedly been killed in a stampede outside Mecca in Saudi Arabia during the holy festival of Eid.
Although details surrounding the incident remain scarce, it appears as many as 220 people were killed and 400 people injured in the crush, according to Saudi authorities.
Local television stations reported the crush occurred outside Mina, a neighbourhood within Mecca. The Saudi civil defence directorate was continuing to revise the death toll upwards from the originally reported 100.
Stampedes have occurred before during the holy event. In 1990, almost 1,500 people died in a stampede outside the tunnel from Mecca towards Mina. One of the most dangerous moments of the celebration is the ceremony known as "Stoning of the Devil". In 2006, more than 340 people died after a bus arrival prompted a stampede.
Hundreds of thousands of Muslims have gathered to celebrate Eid al-Adha, many by making the pilgrimage to Mount Arafat.
