Egypt’s Court of Cassation upheld Saturday a ruling to add 20 defendants to terror lists, turning down their appeal against the ruling.

Those listed are barred from traveling and holding public and parliamentary posts and their assets are frozen.

Earlier, the official gazette published a ruling by Cairo Criminal Court to list 20 persons, including four women, in case no. 444/2018.

The listing is effective for five years in line with the counter-terrorism law.

Separately on Saturday, the Alexandria Criminal Court postponed to May 26 the trial of the accused held over the hijacking of an Egyptian plane and directing it to Cyprus almost three years ago.

The accused has been under the Cypriot authorities’ control since 2016 on charges of “hijacking an airplane by threat and endangering its passengers.”

An Egyptian Interpol team headed in August 2018 to Nicosia and was handed over the accused in response to a request that was approved by Cyprus Supreme Court.

Seif Eldin Mustafa was accused of carrying out terrorist crimes, including “seizing a mean of air transportation by threat and intimidation and kidnapping its passengers and crew members for a terror purpose.”

Using a fake explosive belt, he commandeered a domestic Alexandria-Cairo flight with 72 passengers and crew on board in March 2016, ordering it to land in Cyprus’ Larnaca airport.

He surrendered to Cypriot authorities about six hours after he landed, having gradually released all passengers and crew unharmed.
