Egypt vs Nigeria LIVE: AFCON third-place play-off result, latest updates and fan reaction

AFCON LIVE: Egypt vs Nigeria - (AFP via Getty Images)

Egypt vs Nigeria LIVE

The penultimate fixture of Africa Cup of Nations 2025 saw Egypt and Nigeria face off in the third-place play-off. Both teams suffered the heartbreak of defeat in the semi-final on Wednesday, but it’s the Super Eagles who end the tournament on a positive note by securing a podium finish and a bronze medal.

It was a seventh AFCON third-place play-off for Egypt, who narrowly lost out to Senegal in their last-four showdown, but they still have not won this fixture since 1974 after losing on penalties at the Stade Mohammed V. They will now turn their attentions to preparations for this summer’s World Cup.

The Super Eagles, meanwhile, protect their proud record of never losing this particular fixture, making it nine victories in a row. Without Calvin Bassey through suspension and star striker Victor Osimhen left on the bench throughout, it was down to Ademola Lookman to convert the winning penalty in the shootout after goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali had saved from Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush. This is interesting, Nigeria have lost their last two penalty shootouts.

Against DR Congo in the World Cup play-off back in November and then as recently as Wednesday night in the AFCON semi-final against Morocco.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:56 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

90+1 min: If this game does go to penalties, Chukwueze will not have the chance to redeem himself after his miss in the semi-final shootout.

The winger is replaced by Ejuke.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:54 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

90 min: Board goes up...FOUR minutes of stoppage time.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:52 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

88 min: Marmoush, Ashour and Salah standing over this free-kick...

The latter takes and strikes it straight into the wall. Poor effort.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:51 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

87 min: CHANCE!

Lovely pass from Iwobi to release Lookman and he gets to the byline but can’t pick out a team-mate in the box.

Egypt then race up the other end and Ogbu brings down Rabia to go into the book and concede a free-kick in a dangerous area.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

84 min: Concern for Egypt as Sobhi is down and needs treatment.

The treatment has worked as the defender is back on his feet and back on the pitch.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:46 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

81 min: Play on says the official. Both incidents checked and cleared by VAR.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

Adams then goes down at the other end but his penalty appeal is waved away.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:41 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

77 min: Less than 15 minutes to go. This one looks destined for a penalty shootout.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:38 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

73 min: That was Mohamed’s final act as he makes away for Adel.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:37 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

71 min: The TV director keeps showing Osimhen. At this point, it doesn’t feel like the Nigeria striker will be coming on. Could be wrong though.

In the meantime, the Super Eagles have a corner which Lookman takes and Shobeir punches away and here come Egypt on the attack and Mohamed sees his effort saved by Nwabali.

Offside flag was up, if only he left the ball to Marmoush.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:32 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

67 min: What can Nigeria do with this free-kick?

Nothing is the answer as Chukwueze’s cross is headed away.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:29 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

64 min: Osayi-Samuel is back on the pitch and appears to have made a speedy recovery. However, Nigeria are not going to risk his hamstring and Alex Iwobi comes on.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:26 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

62 min: Superb defending from Osayi-Samuel as he gets back to deny Marmoush and prevent a corner. Though, it’s come at a cost and he requires treatment.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

60 min: Ashour shoots over from just outside the area. Egypt midfielder did well to create space but failed to keep his effort down.

Double Egypt change sees Saber and Marmoush replace Trezeguet and Zizo.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:22 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

57 min: Chance for Nigeria in the box but Lookman can’t find space for a shot and leaves the ball to Simon, though the Super Eagles captain is not on the same wavelength as his team-mate and that allows Egypt to survive.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:19 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

54 min: Shobeir is off his line to make a vital clearance as Adams looked to latch on to a ball over the top. It’s all Nigeria at the moment but here come Egypt on the counter...

Salah cuts in on to left but sees his shot blocked.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

51 min: Onyedika takes aim from range but the effort is straight down the throat of Shobeir and the Egypt goalkeeper makes a comfortable save.

Moments later, Shobeir keeps out a shot from Simon. Similar range and the same outcome.

Nigeria have started the second half with real intent.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:13 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

48 min: Lookman’s introduction means Nigeria revert back to a diamond formation.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

17:11 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

HALF-TIME

16:52 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

There’s the whistle, goalless at the break.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

16:48 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45 min: Crunching tackle from Mohamed on Onyedika but the Egypt forward avoids a booking. Nigeria do have a free-kick but Trezeguet makes first contact to clear the ball.

At the other end, Simon pulls back Salah as the Egypt star looked to race away and is booked.

Four additional minutes signalled.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

16:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

42 min: While Paul Onuachu did make contact with Hamdy Fathy in the build up to the disallowed goal, it did look accidental, so much so the Nigeria striker had no idea what was going on.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

16:43 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

39 min: Goal disallowed!

Paul Onuachu is penalised for an elbow on Hamdy Fathy in the build up.

The bemused Nigeria striker is booked.

GOAL! Egypt 0-1 Nigeria | Paul Onuachu ‘36

16:41 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

36 min: NIGERIA LEAD!

Deadlock broken as Nigeria strike first in the third-place play-off as Akor Adams' header from Samuel Chukwueze's pin-point cross deflects in off Paul Onuachu.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

16:36 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

33 min: Simon not having much joy in his battle with Hany down Nigeria’s left-hand side. Might be worth swapping wings with Chukwueze at some point.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

16:33 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

30 min: Egypt seem happy for Nigeria to get the ball out wide, of course with two target men in the middle they will always be the aim for their crosses.

So far, Egypt have dealt with balls into the box so well.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

16:31 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

28 min: CHANCE!

Egypt get in behind the Nigeria back line and Salah has two bites of the cherry but is denied by Nwabali from close range before the resulting corner comes to nothing.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

16:30 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

27 min: A reminder that there is no extra-time in the third-place play-off.

We will go straight to penalties if it remains goalless after 90 minutes.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

16:28 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

26 min: Penny for the thoughts of Victor Osimhen.

Well in the race for the golden boot award, but named on the bench this afternoon.

Will we see him in the second half?

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

16:27 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

24 min: The Morocco fans in attendance are creating a hostile atmosphere for Egypt as each time a player touches the ball they are greeted by boos.

Cheers follow for Nigeria as they clear their lines from a corner.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

16:24 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

21 min: The game has settled down a touch after a rather frantic start. Nigeria dominating possession but can’t quite find the incisive pass against an Egypt team willing to soak up pressure.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

16:21 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

18 min: Salah drops deep to collect the ball and tries to pick out the run of Trezeguet but Nwabali reads the play and races off his line to make a clearance with his feet.

At the other end, Fathy is alert to head the ball away right in front of Adams who was ready to meet Chukwueze’s cross.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

16:17 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

14 min: First sight of goal for Adams after using his strength to get away from his marker. However, his effort is deflected which makes the save very easy for Shobeir.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

16:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

12 min: Sobhi charges through the middle but overhits his pass to Mohamed and Ajayi shows a great turn of pace to get to the ball first and then shield it out for a goal kick.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

16:14 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

10 min: Nigeria turn over possession but Mohamed can’t squeeze the ball through a gap for Trezeguet. Egypt look a threat when they press the Super Eagles high up the pitch.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

16:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

8 min: After a small delay to fix the corner flag, we are back up and running as Osayi-Samuel launches the ball back into play with a throw but Egypt clear their lines.

Egypt 0-0 Nigeria

16:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

2 min: Nwabali races off his line to smother the ball after Trezeguet looked to pick out Salah on the middle with an outside of the boot cross.

After a pair of hard-fought wins over Zimbabwe and South Africa in the group stage, Egypt grew in confidence and their win over Ivory Coast in the quarter-final was their most eye-catching result.

However, their lack of ambition against Senegal in the semi-final ultimately backfired.

14:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Morocco booked their place in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a dramatic penalty victory over Nigeria in Rabat.

In a dour goalless draw that never looked like finding a winner, it was the hosts who won the battle of nerves from 12 yards at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

Egypt beaten by Senegal again

14:40 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Sadio Mane scored the only goal as Senegal beat Egypt to book their place in the Africa Cup of Nations final.

Both sides lacked quality in Tangier, but Mane produced the necessary moment of class to settle the affair, firing into the bottom corner from 20 yards out to give Senegal the lead 12 minutes from time.

Despite having the all-Premier League strike pairing of Omar Marmoush and Mohamed Salah, Egypt finished the match with just one shot on target.

AFCON third-place play-off stats

14:35 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

- Across the previous 31 matches, the third place play-off has produced 87 goals at an average of 2.85 per game.

- In 13 of the 31 matches, both teams have scored.

- Five previous play-offs, in 1988, 1998, 2000, 2015 and 2023, were decided by penalty shoot-outs.

- The highest-scoring play-off was in 1998, when Burkina Faso and DR Congo drew 4–4, with DR Congo winning on penalties after Burkina Faso had led 3–0 and 4–1.

- The most recent high-scoring play-off ended 3–3 before Cameroon defeated Burkina Faso on penalties, coming back from 3–0 down.

- Burkina Faso have twice surrendered three-goal leads and lost on penalties, in 1998 and 2021.

- At the last edition, South Africa defeated DR Congo on penalties after a 0–0 draw.

- The biggest victory in a third place play-off was Egypt’s 4–0 win over Congo in 1974.

- Only in 2015 and 2023 did the play-off end goalless, with DR Congo defeating Equatorial Guinea on penalties in 2015 and losing to South Africa in 2023.

Chelle targets strong finish

14:30 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

By the same token, Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has stressed the importance of this afternoon's third-place play-off

“We have one more match and we must play well,” Chelle said. “We want to win because we played very well in this tournament and we want to go home with third place.

“My ideas were working before the semi-final, but in that match we lacked quality in some areas. Morocco were a strong team. Now we focus on Egypt and we will do everything to win.”

“This match is important for me. The team has done many good things and third place would reward the hard work. Egypt are a strong side with good organisation, team spirit and players who can change a game. It will be a good match.”

Hassan targets third place

14:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

There is no doubting Hossam Hassan's ambitions this afternoon.

While, the third-place play-off at any tournament is a match teams would rather avoid - being so close to a final - the Egypt boss is keen to secure a bronze medal.

“Egypt has an impressive record with seven African titles, and we are approaching this match against Nigeria with the sole objective of winning," he said during the pre-match press conference.

Predicted Nigeria XI

14:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Chidozie Awaziem is the most likely option to fill in for Bassey against Egypt, with this being the change at half time of the final group game against Uganda.

Elsewhere, Victor Osimhen is a doubt after sustaining an ankle injury during the loss to Morocco which forced him to be substituted in extra-time, shortly before the penalty shootout.

If Osimhen is ruled out, there is the option of Akor Adams leading the line on his own with Moses Simon and Ademola Lookman operating out wide.

Predicted Nigeria XI: Nwabali; Osayi-Samuel, Ajayi, Awaziem, Onyemaechi; Ndidi, Onyeka, Iwobi; Lookman, Adams, Simon.

Predicted Egypt XI

14:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Egypt have leaned on a back three for the majority of the tournament and head coach Hossam Hassan is expected to stick with the system, even if he opts to rotate personnel.

Khaled Sobhi could replace the suspended Hossam Abdelmaguid as the central centre-back with Mahmoud Trezeguet taking Ahmed Fatouh's place at left-wing back.

Predicted Egypt XI: El-Shenawy; Ibrahim, Sobhi, Rabia; Hany, Attia, Fathy, Trezeguet; Ashour; Salah, Marmoush.

Score prediction

13:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Both sides struggled to show a potency in the final third during their respective semi-final ties, and that could be repeated in this game.

Each nation will want to end their tournament on a high, so this should be a decent encounter and we think the Super Eagles will shade it.

Nigeria to win, 2-1.
