Egypt to reopen to tourists next month but many hotels will remain closed

Egypt is set to welcome travellers from July 1 - adding another potential destination for UK holiday hopefuls.

But despite reopening its borders, many parts of the country will still be off limits and visitors will be limited to staying overnight at the country’s coastal resorts like Sharm El Sheikh.

Other restrictions on accommodation will see hotels required to obtain a government-approved hygiene safety certificate before being able to receive guests.

Hotels will also only be able to operate at 50% capacity.

Some tourist hot spots will also reopen, with the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities confirming eight archaeological sites will be reopened - including the Pyramids of Giza.

Tourism accounts for more than 10% of Egypt’s economy and in a bid to entice visitors, tourist visas for visitors to the country’s "touristic governorates" will not be required until the end of October.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office currently advises British nationals against all but essential international travel.

This advice is being kept under constant review.

Regarding Egypt, the FCO advises against all travel to the Governorate of North Sinai.
