Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Dr. Mohamed Abdel Aty, underlined the need to achieve maximum levels of cooperation and coordination between his country and Iraq, for the sake of sustainable development and optimal management of water resources.

During a meeting on Monday with the Egyptian delegation that visited Iraq earlier this month, he reviewed the outcome of the talks and the means to enhance cooperation between the two countries in the field of water resources management.

“The visit of a high-level Egyptian delegation to Iraq is one of the results of the first meeting of the Egyptian-Iraqi Joint Technical Steering Committee in the field of water resources and irrigation on June 6, which ended with an agreement to form a working group of Egyptian technicians to visit Iraq,” the minister said.

The delegation included experts in irrigation development, research, rainwater harvesting and forecasting systems.

He added that the visit aimed to discuss opportunities to enhance cooperation in the field of water management between the two brotherly countries, and to agree on a joint work program.

An official statement by Cairo said Iraqi official will visit to Egypt to learn more about Egypt’s successful experiences in canal rehabilitation, modern irrigation, irrigation development, agricultural drainage water reuse and flood forecasting.

The two sides also agreed that Egypt provide a number of training courses for Iraqi specialists in the areas of construction and maintenance of rainwater harvesting dams and rational management of groundwater.
