With an aim to modernize the railway network in Egypt, Egyptian Transport Minister Kamel el-Wazir and his Spanish counterpart, Raquel Sanchez, met in Cairo Thursday and discussed boosting bilateral cooperation on transportation.

“Spanish companies are basic and strategic partners to the Egyptian Ministry of Transport in all railway and metro projects as they contribute 50 percent to these projects, particularly the development of signaling and communications systems,” Wazir said following the meeting, which was also attended by head of Egyptian National Railways Mostafa Abul Makarem.

The Egyptian minister lauded the distinguished ties binding the two countries in different domains, including transportation.

Wazir said there are promising investment opportunities in the transport sector in Egypt.

Sanchez lauded the Egyptian-Spanish ties and the fruitful cooperation in the transport sector.

A statement issued by the Egyptian cabinet on Thursday quoted Wazir as saying that cooperation with Spain includes projects, which aim to develop the railway signaling and communication systems on some railway lines in the country.

Spain would ship six new trains to Egypt and upgrade 23 trains of the Cairo Metro’s first line.
