Egypt reported a decline in daily COVID-19 recovery rates during the past 48 hours, according to official statistics released on Tuesday.

A total of 333 patients have been discharged from hospitals in the past 24 hours, compared to 765 a day earlier, Egypt's Health Ministry reported.

The country is currently witnessing a slight increase in daily coronavirus positive cases as it battles the pandemic's third wave.

On Monday, it detected 852 new coronavirus infections, raising the total number of cases nationwide to 217,168.

The Ministry also reported 40 deaths, raising death toll to 12,778.

The government banned public prayers and gatherings during Ramadan, following a decision to impose a nighttime curfew from 7pm to 6am, demanding the closure of all shops, restaurants and malls at 5pm. It also imposed a total lockdown on Thursdays and Fridays.

Officials urged citizens to take stronger precautionary measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus, particularly that cases have been rising since the start of Ramadan.

In this regard, Egypt has agreed to purchase 20 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine produced by China's Sinopharm and expects to receive a batch of 500,000 shots this month, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

The agreement boosts vaccination efforts in Egypt, which has a population of 100 million and has so far received a total of just over 1.5 million doses of Sinopharm and of the AstraZeneca shot.

Earlier this month, Egypt announced it was preparing to produce up to 80 million doses of the vaccine produced by China's Sinovac.
