Egypt’s Deputy Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Osama Asran said that the Egyptian government endorses an ambitious program to support local manufacturing of the electric power system.

The electricity sector seeks to nationalize technology and increase local participation in designing and manufacturing electrical power stations, he stated during the inauguration of the 28th edition of Electricx 2018.

He noted that the total added electrical capacities to the unified electrical grid in Egypt will reach around 25,000-megawatt at the end of 2018.

Initially, more than EGP45 billion (around USD2.5 billion) was allocated to enhance and develop distribution and transformation grids, Asran continued.

Smart grids represent a transitional leap in the future of transforming and distributing electrical energy, he said. These grids depend mainly on exploiting renewable energy, achieving the best use of electricity and reducing the cost of production.

Egypt has been facing a crisis of electrical cut-off during the past years, and a plan has been put in 2014 that includes implementing programs of electricity generating, in addition to adding around 3,636 megawatts as an urgent plan. This plan contributed to increasing expertise of Egyptian firms.

The future vision of the Egyptian electrical sector is based on a gradual transformation from depending on the current grid to a smart grid characterized by modern technologies, information systems and dealing with electricity generating sources. This would contribute to improving the efficiency of energy usage, providing electricity supply and reducing emissions.

More than 300 exhibitors of international and local firms are taking part in Electricx 2018. The total number of visitors is expected to exceed 10,000 representing more than 20 countries.
