Egypt is seeking to become a regional hub for manufacturing the coronavirus vaccine for Africa and other countries.

Egyptian authorities are expecting the arrival of a new batch of Sputnik vaccines before the end of the year.

The Health Ministry confirmed on Sunday 389 new infections, taking the total to 280,394. It registered 30 new fatalities, raising the toll to 16,092. Recoveries have climbed to 210,052.

Presidential Adviser for Health and Prevention Affairs Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din said Egypt has overcome the peak of the third wave of the coronavirus.

In a televised statement, he noted a decline in cases, but warned that the outbreak was not over.

He stressed the importance of continued compliance with the precautionary measures to curb the spread of the virus.

He credited the decline in cases to the national plan that is being implemented under the supervision of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and in cooperation with relevant state institutions.

Tag El-Din stressed that upon Sisi’s recommendation, Egypt is planning on becoming a regional hub for manufacturing vaccines.

Egypt expects to receive 1.9 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines from the COVAX facility next month, its health ministry said in a statement. The country has also procured 210,000 shots of the Sputnik V vaccine and aims to procure 20 million more by the end of the year.
