Egypt's Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker said that his country's daily power reserves reached more than 15,000 MW, allowing it to establish electricity interconnection projects with countries in Africa, Europe and the Gulf.
His remarks came during the "Intentional Sustainable Development Conference," organized by the Institute of National Planning in Cairo, which will last for two days.
Shaker also highlighted the project to interconnect the electrical grids of Egypt, Iraq and Jordan, saying it would contribute to stabilizing power systems in those counties and would help establish a joint Arab energy market.
For her part, Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala El-Saeed said the energy sector plays a vital role in achieving sustainable development worldwide.
She also outlined the major challenges facing the sector in Egypt, noting that these challenges necessitate reducing the reliance on fossil fuels for energy purposes and embracing clean energy use as an alternative to help attaining the UN-adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Saeed further said that the COVID-19 crisis, which lead to recession and economic downturn, resulted in a decrease in global demand for oil and affected the energy sector.
However, she said that the impact of the virus had been less severe in Egypt, due to the economic and social reform programs that aim to improve energy and sustainable development.
