Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi signed on Saturday the document to establish the “July 3” naval base in the northwestern coastal region of Gargoub.
Sisi raised the Egyptian flag over the base, which is the most modern Egyptian military position on the Mediterranean.
A 21-gun salute welcomed the president.
The naval base is located in a strategic position that would protect marine traffic and security in the area. It boasts surface and submarine units and is backed by air forces.
The base is part of ongoing efforts to bolster Egyptian forces along the Red and Mediterranean Seas to confront any possible threat and to combat smuggling and illegal migrant operations.
