Egypt Reveals Details of Skeletons Found Inside Sarcophagus

Mostafa Wazir, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, inspects the site of the newly discovered giant black sarcophagus in Sidi Gaber district of Alexandria, Egypt July 19, 2017 - Reuters

Egypt said researchers have determined the gender and age of the three skeletons found inside a black granite sarcophagus uncovered in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria in July.

Nadia Kheider, of the Antiquities Ministry, said Sunday the skeletons belong to a woman in her early 20s, a man in his late 30s and a man in his early 40s, AP reported.

Chief researcher Zeinab Hasheesh stated that one of the skulls has a cavity indicating a "surgical intervention."

Head of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Waziri said researchers found gold inside some of the bones.

According to AP, the 2,000-year-old sarcophagus, filled with red fluid which the ministry said was sewage water, created a stir on social media.
