Egypt provide Mohamed Salah coronavirus update including potential Liverpool return date

Mohamed Salah could return to Liverpool this Thursday so long as he returns a negative coronavirus test, according to an Egyptian health official.

Salah, 28, has been in self-isolation until in Egypt after testing positive last Friday ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with Togo.

Salah was filmed dancing at his brother's wedding in Cairo only four days before he returned the positive test.

The winger is spending his time in self-isolation in El-Gouna, a tourist resort on the Red Sea, and faces another coronavirus test on Thursday.

Salah will be able to return to Merseyside if that test comes back negative - and the Egyptian Ministry of Health's Covid-19 committee chief is confident it will.

Hossam Hosny said: "Salah is currently in El-Gouna to complete his quarantine and he will conduct another PCR test on Thursday, and I expect that his result will be negative because until now, the player hasn't shown any symptoms.

"Like any Egyptian citizen, Salah underwent all needed medical scans and tests that showed he is not suffering from any symptoms and he is now following medical protocol with self-isolation.

" Liverpool are communicating with us to check on Salah, and their medical staff have agreed that he will travel to El-Gouna.

"And Salah can return to England if his test result on Thursday is negative."

However, the Premier League's protocols mean Salah will not be able to feature in Liverpool's clash with Leicester on Sunday evening even if his test comes back negative on Thursday.

Therefore, the Reds will hope to have their top scorer back in contention for the Champions League clash with Atalanta next Wednesday.

Salah scored in the reverse fixture against the Serie A side - a 5-0 rout in Italy - and netted a penalty in the 1-1 draw with Manchester City to take his tally for the season to 10 goals.
