Committees assigned with organizing Egypt’s presidential elections, with ballots being set up in Egyptian embassies around the world, will end their work by Sunday, three days after they were opened.

The elections see two candidates, incumbent and favorite President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and his rival al-Ghad party leader Moussa Mustafa Moussa.

Elections were held for Egyptians residing abroad in 139 polling stations around the world.

National Election Authority official spokesman Mahmoud al-Sherif said that polling stations at the embassies and consulate offices have secured all documents involved in the electoral process, including the number of those who cast their vote.

In a press conference at the headquarters of the National Elections Commission in central Cairo, Sherif said that the second day of the election witnessed a satisfactory voter turnout, while the largest numbers came from Egyptians residing in Gulf countries, such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait.

The number of Egyptians residing in Saudi Arabia is estimated at 3 million, the largest in the world, accounting for about 46 percent of Egyptian expatriates.

Sherif stressed that there is continuous cooperation between the Commission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who are both keeping a close eye on the electoral process.

“The Commission coordinated with election committees to ensure that the electoral process overcomes all obstacles,” he stressed.

Voting will take place in Egypt over three days from March 26-28.
