The Egyptian government anticipated the wave of bad weather that meteorologists said would hit the country as of Thursday, adopting precautionary measures, including suspending studies in all schools and universities and giving workers in the public and private sectors an official leave.
A report by the Egyptian Meteorological Authority warned that the country was exposed to a severe state of instability in weather conditions from Thursday till Saturday, and will include torrential rains and strong winds.
“This decision comes in the context of allowing the concerned authorities and bodies to take all necessary measures, and to deal immediately with the repercussions of the instability in the weather, and the negative effects resulting from it,” Nader Saad, spokesperson for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, said in a press statement on Wednesday.
Because of the bad weather, the Egyptian Football Association also decided to postpone matches of the premier league competition that was scheduled to be held this Thursday.
Experts expect heavy rains and thunderstorms throughout all regions, with wind activity that disrupts maritime navigation in the Mediterranean.
Officials warned that the 1994 bad weather wave would hit the country again. Governorates of southern Egypt witnessed heavy rain that lasted for three hours leading to a violent torrent over the western mountain that caused the villages to be completely submerged leaving houses collapsed and roads destroyed. The wave spread to most parts of the republic and caused great material and human losses.
