Egypt formed a new team to investigate the death of Italian student Giulio Regeni who was murdered in Cairo in 2016, Egypt’s public prosecutor’s office said on Wednesday.

Regeni, 28, disappeared in Cairo on Jan. 25, 2016 and his body was discovered several days later showing signs of torture. Egyptian officials have repeatedly denied any involvement in Regeni’s killing.

Egyptian public prosecutor Hamada El-Sawy said that “a new investigation team was formed and is working on studying the case.”

The team “is working on taking all the necessary investigation procedures to clarify the truth in a completely neutral and independent way,” he noted.

Sawy stressed that the prosecution authorities of both countries are cooperating to uncover the truth behind the killing with "complete objectivity and transparency, away from false information reported by the media about the case."

Italy summoned Egypt’s ambassador in April 2016, for the murder of Regeni. However, he returned to Egypt after more than a year.

Egypt’s public prosecution reported that the public prosecutor and the investigation team met with several Italian investigators during joint meetings that were held in the past two days to hear Italian investigators' visions and to exchange information and points of view.

The two parties agreed on proceeding with the fruitful judicial cooperation between the two prosecutions. They also affirmed that they will carry out all necessary procedures while respecting the two countries’ regulations.
