Egypt is currently exporting 520 million cubic feet of liquified natural gas (LNG) per day from its Idku export plant, a petroleum ministry official said on Wednesday.
The country had been exporting 300 million cubic feet of LNG, Reuters quoted the official as saying.
The gas is exported by Malaysia’s Petronas, Royal Dutch Shell, and Egypt’s two main state oil and gas companies.
Tarek El-Molla, Egypt's Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, chaired on Wednesday a meeting of the government committee ordered by the prime minister to turn Egypt into a regional energy hub.
In a press release, Molla said that the working team, including representatives of ministries and state institutions, has outlined a comprehensive strategy for setting up a regional hub for gas and oil.
The strategy includes three phases the first of which is studying similar projects worldwide. The second involves a technical and economic assessment for proposed alternatives while the third includes setting a plan for implementation, he added.
