An Egyptian court sentenced on Saturday 10 people to death after they were found guilty of forming a terrorist group and planning attacks on police and security forces, local judicial sources said.

The Giza Criminal Court also jailed five people for life in prison for similar charges, the sources added on condition of anonymity.

Prosecutors had accused the defendants of forming a group for plotting attacks against state institutions, security forces and Coptic Christians.

Saturday’s verdicts are still subject to appeal.

State news agency MENA said the convicted men were supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood which was banned in Egypt after the 2013 overthrow of former President Mohamed Mursi.

Egypt was roiled by violence after the military deposed Mohamed Mursi, the country’s first freely elected president, in a 2013 coup.

Since Mursi’s overthrow, Egyptian authorities launched a relentless crackdown on dissent, killing hundreds and detaining thousands.
