
The Cairo Criminal Court has referred the case of a terror suspect to the Grand Mufti ahead of his expected death sentence on March 3 during the retrial of the suspects in the case known in the media as the October Terrorist Cell.
The Court of Cassation has accepted the appeals of seven suspects, five of whom were sentenced to death by the Giza Criminal Court in September.
The same court had also issued life sentences and imposed penalties of EGP20,000 on the two other suspects.
The charges of the seven suspects included premeditated murder and terrorism.
The Public Prosecution accused the suspects of forming a terrorist cell to target individuals, the police and armed forces' institutions in addition to plotting to target Christians.
According to investigators, the suspects committed their crimes between Oct. 2013 and Jan. 28, 2014.
Prosecutors said that the defendants established a group that aimed to violate the provisions of the constitution and the law, prevent state institutions from functioning and attack personal freedoms.
The indictment also included charges of arms possession to create instability, and violate laws, national unity and social peace.
In the same context, the Cairo Criminal Court adjourned the retrial of two convicts in the Giza violent acts to March 2.
Following former president Mohammed Morsi’s ouster in July 2013, Egypt witnessed violent acts and explosions that claimed hundreds of lives, including civilians and security officers.
