Egypt's naval forces received on Thursday a third Type 209/1400 submarine from Germany, the armed forces said in a statement.

The submarine, S43, is part of a deal for four submarines signed between the two countries in 2011 and 2014, said Tamer al-Refai, spokesman of the Egyptian armed forces.

"Egypt received the submarine after the technical and specialized crew completed simultaneous training in Egypt and Germany in record time," Refai added.

Manufactured by the German company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, the submarine is equipped with advanced navigation and speed systems.

"It is a vital part of military strategies and works in various marine environments," said the statement.

Egypt received the first submarine, S41, in December 2016 and the second, S42, in August 2017.

It is noteworthy that military cooperation between Egypt and Germany increased with the arrival of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to power in 2014.

As part of Egypt’s strategy for enhancing combat capabilities and diversifying arms deals, the African country concluded major deals with Russia, France, China, and Germany that included the purchase of naval vessels, fighter planes, and submarines.

Egypt is working to redevelop and establish its naval fleet and the infrastructure of various berths, bases, installations, and services.

According to Lieutenant General Ahmed Khaled, commander of the navy, this type of submarine helps in implementing the Egyptian military strategy aimed at developing abilities to face challenges and risks in the region.
