'Egged' headteacher cancels school leavers' prom

Students at a school in Aberdeen will have to go without their traditional leavers' ball after their headteacher was reportedly egged. AberdeenLive reported the alleged incident occurred at Cults Academy last month when headteacher David Barnett was struck by eggs thrown by S6 students.

Mr Barnett announced that he was cancelling the S6 leaver ball as a result. The egging is believed to have happened on April 22, the last day before students began their exams.

The ball, for which students had paid £40 to attend, was set to take place on June 6 at Ardoe House. In a letter reportedly sent to parents, Mr Barnett described the students' behaviour as "appalling", although he admitted that the offenders were a minority.

An Aberdeen City Council spokesperson said: "We can confirm reports of events which have impacted on members of the community, staff and pupils, and have regrettably led to the cancellation of the annual leavers' ball. These incidents have been reported to the police and it would not be appropriate to comment further."

Police Scotland said that while they had been made aware of the incidents, no further action was being taken by officers. A spokesperson said: "We are aware of reports of eggs being thrown in the Quarry Road area of Cults on Friday, April 22.

"Officers attended and liaised with school management, who are taking their own action. There is no further police involvement."
