'Egg thrown at King Charles' for second time in a month

A man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of common assault after an egg was allegedly thrown in the direction of the King during a walkabout.

Bedfordshire Police said the suspect is currently in custody for questioning after being arrested in St George's Square in Luton on Tuesday. Charles had been temporarily steered away from the crowds outside Luton Town Hall by his security staff shortly after arriving.

He then resumed shaking hands with members of the public after being moved to a different area.

The attack comes after a man threw eggs at the monarch on November 9. King Charles III and his Queen Consort, Camilla, were doing a walkabout at Micklegate Bar, in York, when a protestor decided to try and attack them. The detainee was said to have tried to throw eggs at the royals before screaming at them.

The King and Queen Consort were being welcomed to York by city leaders when a protester threw three eggs at them, all of which missed before the pair were ushered away. The man was heard to shout "this country was built on the blood of slaves" as he was being detained by around four police officers.

Other people in the crowd started chanting "God save the King" and "shame on you" at the protester as police quickly arrested him. Several police officers at Micklegate Bar were seen restraining the suspect on the ground behind temporary fencing set up in the city for the King's visit.
