EFL's five proposals to end season - including one Nottingham Forest will be desperate to avoid

English Football League clubs are set to vote next week on proposals for how to end the season, should it need to be curtailed.

The Championship campaign is due to resume for Nottingham Forest and their divisional rivals on June 20, having been suspended since March due to the coronavirus crisis.

An EFL board meeting took place on Wednesday to discuss proposals on how to conclude 2019/20, if it cannot be completed, with a number of ideas said to have been left on the table.

Clubs were due to cast their first vote on potentially changing the regulations next Monday, but that has now been pushed back 24 hours and will take place on Tuesday, June 9.

The EFL favours the traditional format of promotion, relegation and a four-team play-off, with the final standings decided by a points-per-game metric if games cannot be played - but that has been met with some objections.

League Two clubs have already voted to curtail the season and the Championship have set a restart date, but there is still uncertainty around League One - and the vote on framework if the season cannot be completed could be decisive.

Tranmere Rovers, who sit 21st in League One and would be relegated under the PPG metric proposed by the EFL, have been vocal critics.

The Sun have detailed the five proposals on the table.

The first is for relegation to be scrapped if the season is not completed, but that would leave the Premier League in a strong position to dismiss promotion from the Championship as a result.

An alternative points-per-game system has also been proposed, with the EFL’s solution being ‘unweighted’ but some clubs are pushing for a ‘weighted’ system, where home and away results are assessed differently.

How to work out penalties in the PPG system is also on the cards, with the question orientating around whether they are put into the running total or after the average is worked out.

No relegation from League Two has also been proposed, and has been favoured by clubs in the lowest division of the EFL but may not get the support of the higher leagues.

Finally, play-off options are also set to be discussed as some ‘rebel’ clubs in League One are pushing for a new way of deciding who goes up and who goes down.

A statement from the EFL after Wednesday's meeting said: "The EFL Board met today and considered a number of proposals submitted by EFL clubs in respect of proposed amendments to EFL regulations in order to determine what will happen in the event the 2019/20 season is curtailed in any EFL division.

"This now brings an end to a comprehensive consultation phase and clubs have today received formal notice of the meeting which will now take place on Tuesday, 9 June, 2020.

"At that meeting clubs will consider a number of different proposals from both clubs and the board of the EFL."
