EFL rule-change meeting will take place on Tuesday

EFL clubs will vote on Tuesday whether to change the rules to allow finishing positions to be decided based on points-per-game if the season is cut short.

Following today's EFL board meeting, an extraordinary general meeting [EGM] has been called for Tuesday morning.

And at the EGM, proposals put forward by its board as to how the season should be determined if clubs do not want to play on due to the Covid-19 crisis, and a number of alternative proposals put forward by clubs, will be put to the vote.

In a statement, the EFL said: "The EFL board met today and considered a number of proposals submitted by EFL clubs in respect of proposed amendments to EFL Regulations in order to determine what will happen in the event the 2019/20 season is curtailed in any EFL division.

"This now brings an end to a comprehensive consultation phase and clubs have today received formal notice of the meeting which will now take place on Tuesday, June 9, 2020.

"At that meeting clubs will consider a number of different proposals from both clubs and the board of the EFL."

The EFL board proposal, which is the one most likely to be passed, is that each of its three divisions - the Championship, League One, and League Two - will be allowed to vote whether to complete the season or curtail the campaign, with a simple 51 percent majority of clubs in that division needed to hold sway.

And if the season is curtailed, finishing positions, automatic promotion places, relegation places, and play-off spots, will be determined using unweighted points-per-game.

In the Championship, a majority of clubs are understood to want to play on and the EFL has already announced June 20 as the date for a restart.

League Two clubs have already indicated that they want to cut short the season.

But League One remains split, with Sunderland belonging to a group of clubs keen to play on, while there is also a hardcore of clubs who want the season to end now either because settling the table based on points-per-games suits them, or because they fear the financial implications of playing out the remainder of the season behind-closed-doors.
