EFL postpones Friday night fixtures as mark of respect following death of Queen

The EFL has postponed Friday night's fixtures as a mark of respect following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

Burnley were due to take on Norwich City in the Championship while Tranmere Rovers were set to play host to Stockport County in League Two, but both games will now be rescheduled.

A statement from the EFL read: "As a mark of respect, following the passing of Her Majesty, The Queen Elizabeth II earlier today, the EFL has confirmed that its fixtures scheduled for tomorrow evening (Friday 9 September) – Burnley v Norwich City and Tranmere Rovers v Stockport County - have been postponed.

"A determination regarding the remainder of this weekend's scheduled fixtures will be made following a review of the official mourning guidance, in addition to further consultation with DCMS and other sports on Friday morning."

A decision has not yet been made on whether matches will be played this weekend but the full fixture list in the UK is expected to be postponed.

An announcement is likely to be made on Friday morning, with Premier League games also being temporarily cancelled and rescheduled.

Arsenal were in action against FC Zurich in the Europa League when the news broke that the Queen had passed away at the age of 96.

A minute's silence was observed before the start of the second half in Switzerland.

Meanwhile, the FA and UEFA jointly decided that Manchester United's Europa League clash with Real Sociedad would go ahead due to the fact that fans had already started travelling to Old Trafford for the fixture.

A minute's silence was similarly observed before kick-off with players wearing black armbands as a mark of respect and flags around the stadium being flown at half-mast.

Golf and horse racing were suspended as soon as the Queen's death was announced by Buckingham Palace on Thursday afternoon.

Racing at Southwell and Chelmsford was called off and play was suspended at the BWM PGA Championship at Wentworth.

In rugby union, Northampton's Premiership clash against Saracens was also postponed.

And Friday's play in the Third Test between England and South Africa at the Oval was stopped. A decision will soon be made on the remaining days' action.
