EFL names the two League One clubs operating under transfer embargoes ahead of the new season

Two League One clubs are operating under transfer embargoes a month before the new season kicks off, the EFL has confirmed.

Fleetwood Town - managed by former Sunderland boss Simon Grayson - and Gillingham are included on a list of eight clubs which have had transfer restrictions imposed, with three Championship clubs also under sanction along with three more in League Two.

The embargoes place limits on clubs' ability to make new signings, preventing them from paying transfer fees but permitting them to sign free agents, and players on loan.

The clubs in the Championship affected by the embargoes are Derby County, Reading, and newly-promoted Hull City.

In League Two, Swindon Town, Oldham Athletic, and Scunthorpe United are the sides under sanction.

The list has been made public for the first time after clubs agreed at a meeting last month that the information should be published.

Fleetwood's embargo was imposed as a condition of their monitored loan agreement.

Gillingham's embargo has been imposed as a condition of their monitored loan agreement, and also because their accounts have not been filed with Companies House on time.

The monitored loan agreements relate to money that EFL clubs were able to apply for as part of the rescue package agreed last year to help tide them over during the Covid crisis.

All EFL clubs were entitled to a grant to compensate them for lost gate receipts, but clubs could seek further cash based on need.

Clubs who received the additional money were told they would have to operate under restrictions on transfer spending and player wages, unless the cash was repaid to the EFL.
