EFL makes decision on Bristol City and Bristol Rovers' seasons amid rising COVID cases

The EFL has confirmed fixtures will continue "where it is safe to do so" amid rising cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

The virus has decimated playing schedules in recent weeks, with dozens of matches across the EFL and Premier League called off over the festive period due to outbreaks in playing squads.

A "circuit breaker" pause to the schedule had been mooted with EFL clubs due to meet on the issue on Tuesday, but on Monday the governing body followed the lead of the Premier League and the fixture list will remain in place as planned.

Last week, "RED protocols" with an increase in social distancing, daily testing and vaccination programmes were implemented by the EFL in an attempt to curb the impact of the virus.

And the EFL has also confirmed playing regulations, with squads obliged to fulfil their fixtures if they have 14 players available, including a goalkeeper.

Bristol City's game against Huddersfield Town went ahead as planned on Saturday, but Bristol Rovers were unable to field a side for the trip to Scunthorpe United after manager Joey Barton revealed "six or seven" positive COVID tests were returned by his squad.

The situation at Rovers has worsened slightly since, with a "small increase" in positive cases over the weekend leading to the Boxing Day clash with Sutton United being postponed.

City are set to travel to Luton Town in the Championship on Boxing Day.

Seven EFL fixtures across Boxing Day and December 27 have already been postponed owing to the virus.

EFL chief executive Trevor Birch said: “Throughout the pandemic, our two priorities have been ensuring the welfare of those involved in EFL competitions and ensuring the fixture schedule can continue where it is safe to do so.

“We will continue to work with clubs, authorities and other agencies to monitor the Covid-19 case rate and be prepared to respond accordingly, yet for now the view remains that we can continue to deliver games safely where clubs have sufficient healthy personnel in place, on and off the pitch.

“With club mitigation measures, the mass adoption of booster jabs and Covid certification now required for larger crowds, we are sure many fans will continue to feel confident in attending matches over the Christmas period and we look forward to welcoming them.”
