An update on Sunderland's season is expected on Friday, where plans on if/how the season will be completed could be clarified.
A statement was released on behalf of EFL, Premier League, Professional Footballers’ Association and League Managers’ Association on Wednesday evening, with the organisations saying no decisions had been made, but meetings had been taking place and would continue to do so across the subsequent 48 hours.
And with that timeframe, we can, therefore, expect an update from the EFL and the other English football authorities over when/if football can resume.
In light of yesterday’s decisions by RFU and Royal Belgian FA to end their 2019/20 seasons, it seems unlikely there will be a full programme laid out for the resumption of League One and the other English football leagues.
More likely seems to be a further postponement of play resuming. Currently, play is postponed until April 30, but few expect any football in May.
Wimbledon 2020 was cancelled this week, a major sporting event which takes place in late June. Another guide for which direction football may go in.
Sunderland were seventh in the League One table when the season was brought to an unexpected suspension, but they still eight games to play, while the majority of their promotion rivals have nine or ten to play - with a potential cramming of fixtures in a short space of time potentially benefiting Phil Parkinson's side if the season was to be resumed.
