EFL decide not to use VAR for this season's play-off finals at Wembley Stadium

The EFL have announced that VAR will not be used in the end of season play-off finals at Wembley.

The video technology will be used in all Premier League games next season, but the EFL have decided not to use it in the three play-off finals this season, despite Wembley having the capacity to use it.

The technology was used in the Carabao Cup final in the national stadium, but then not in the Checkatrade Trophy final where Sunderland lost to Portsmouth.

In that game were no controversial decisions that affected the outcome, but with so much money riding on the play-off finals it's an interesting decision taken by the EFL.

While it will be rolled out next season in every Premier League game, the EFL says it is currently not possible to follow suit in the next three divisions in the football pyramid.

As well as some the grounds still not having enough camera positions to facilitate the technology needed, they also say they don't have enough referees with the required training to operate the equipment.

Still, the decision to not use it Wembley for play-off finals could prove a controversial one if any officiating errors are made.

Sunderland , of course, will be hoping to avoid another trip to the national stadium this season, with the goal being on automatic promotion instead.
