The tournament marked the return of competitive action for the Premier League clubs still involved after the World Cup break. Wolves, Southampton, Newcastle and Leicester City all advanced on Tuesday evening.

However, Brighton and Hove Albion were dumped out on penalties against Charlton Athletic on Wednesday night as Manchester United beat Burnley and Nottingham Forest thrashed Blackburn Rovers.

The final tie of the last-16 saw City race into an early lead via Erling Haaland only for Fabio Carvalho to equalise against the run of play. Riyad Mahrez restored City's lead shortly after the break but Mohamed Salah instantly hit back.

Yet Nathan Ake headed in a pinpoint Kevin de Bruyne cross to give Pep Guardiola's side victory and become the eighth name in the hat for the draw.
